There are so many genealogy sites for the masses. Why start a personal one?

Honestly? I’ve wanted to have my own small-ish genealogy blog for a long time, but various factors kept getting in my way. And then one person’s site really pushed me over the line of do it/don’t do it. My fiancée helped me come up with my site title, and here I am!

The Roots of Us?

I have trouble naming my family trees. Even more so once I had a new surname from my late wife. Why? Because families are made up of so many surnames. Which one should be the most prominent that you name the site after it?

I couldn’t decide. On top of the above issue, I’ve been helping friends and family with their own trees, and wanted to provide resources for all of them as well. That further squashed the idea of using one of my surnames as the site name. None of them would really be right.

So, Lori and I had a brainstorming session, and she came up with The Root of Us. After some digging and thinking, we changed it to The Roots of Us.

Forum

Eventually, I hope to set-up a forum on this site as well. It will be for the specific families I’ve been doing trees for, so that they can interact with each other. It will not be for the public-at-large.

Site Security

Although I don’t plan to sell anything on this site, I had my host make the site SSL (secure socket layer), because SSL protects sensitive information. It encrypts information so that it is not readable until it reaches the server it is intended for, and it cannot be intercepted.
